Are you looking to buy a new cell phone?

Hey,

Are you looking to buy a new or used cell phone and not sure which one you should get?

Well let me tell you about my experience with cell phones. I have owned close to 20 cell phones in the past two years and I frequently come in contact with others. People usually come to me with the price range they want to spend, things that are important to them for their cell phone, and what they essentially are going to use it for. I decided that I could help a lot more people if I made a website out of here and people could just post what cell phones they wanted to buy.

I'll start a new post on the first day of every month to say what phones I have recently come in contact with.

Things you need to include are

- How much you want to spend
- What is important (camera, text messaging)
- What service provider you use
- What you're going to use it for
- Essentially any other preferences
- If you are looking at cell phones and debating between a couple I can help you there also!
- Where you live (Optional) - if you are local I could probably hook you up with some good deals!

Looking to spend about 200 dollars on a phone. The features that are very important to me are camera, text messaging and ease of use. I am from Ottawa, Canada. I am currently using the rogers network. I want a phone that has good reception and looks cool.
I would prefer Sony Ericsson or Nokia.

Thanks
Pat

Hey Pat

Well I would consider the Sony Ericsson k790a or the w800i. They both have pretty good cameras and the functionality on them for text messaging is outstanding!

I personally like the k790 better just because the camera is spectacular! It also has excellent rogers reception, the phone is loud enough to hear people and not too loud when you talk into it.

I hope this helps!

Hi,

I'm looking into getting either the Sony Ericsson K790a or the W810i, as mentioned in the previous post. The K790a seems to play up its top-notch camera, whereas the W810i seem to concentrate on music. So my question: does the K790a have less functionality playing media (such as MP3s) or does it have the same functions as the W810i except marketed differently?

Also, if I wanted to get the best deal on a K790 (new or used) do you have some suggestions about where I should look to purchase?

Thanks,
Steve

Hey Steve,

Well as far as the media players in between the two phones, the w810i makes it much easier to get to your music by having "walkman" buttons right on the phone whereas when you use the k790a you actually have to navigate through the menus. As far as the interface they won't be too different. The w810i has a slightly nicer interface but as far as functions go they are pretty much on par with each other.

It really comes down to size, how much you want to spend, and if the camera matters.

Sony Ericsson's software on the K and the W series are very similar and if you are able to navigate one you will surely be able to navigate the other.

Steve if you don't mind me asking where you are from? Too bad I didn't see this post earlier I just sold my k790 for $200. I'm sure I can find you something similar.

Hope that helps!

Hi again,

Ah I see, thats important to know there isn't a big diffence with respect to MP3s. The camera is important to me, but only if the quality is excellent. So far I have been quite disappointed with cell phone camera quality, but the K790 really impressed me - enough to shell out the extra cash for sure. 3 megapixel quality seems like a huge jump compared to the standard 1 to 2 mp.

And I live in Ottawa; I just graduated from U of O.

It is about dollars and if you want to have end phone like N80 or D900 or N95..you have to pay and if you gonna talk and text...well you can get that for 50 bucks...so what you pay what you get..simple as that

Hey Steve,

I would definately suggest getting the k790a! Honestly I've been very skeptical about camera pictures but it's insane how good these pictures are for a camera phone. When I owned the k790a I honestly would never bring my digital camera around and it was so convienient to always have that camera around even for times that you really didnt expect it!

Steve - email me at

and hopefully I'll be able to help you out!

Great work cell phone expert, I really like the layout of this fresh new site! I will defintely be back when I am in the market for a new phone!

Steve, while I am not a cell phone geek by any means, I can certainly attest to the quality of the k790. The phone s a really nice size, the software and display are excellent and as has already been discussed, the camera is incredible and very convenient to have anytime you have the hone with you.

Hi, I'm looking to purchase a phone (new or slightly used)which will work with Rogers network. I'm looking to spend between $100 to $200, since I only have 1 year left on my contract. I would like a phone that I can use for calling (obviously), text messaging and it would be nice to finally have a phone with a decent camera. I was looking at the KRZR, pearl or the Sony Ericson k790i. Any suggestions? Thanks. Amber (amberine_sheikh@hotmail.com)

Hey Amber,

Well I may have some good news for you depending on what kind of plan and situation you're in.

But did you know that you can upgrade your rogers plan. So for example if you have a year left and you plan on staying with rogers after your contract expires then what you can do is actually starting from today upgrade your contract.

Essentially what this means is that you could do a hardware upgrade and extend your contract by 2/3 years and get the price at the 2/3 year NEW contract rate. So this is a great option that I would highly suggest if you plan on staying with rogers in the future.

If not and you plan on switching to fido/bell/telus then out of the three phones you named I would suggest the Krzr only because that is probably the only phone you could get in that range. The Krzr is a very user friendly phone, it's small and nice.
My only negative comments on the phone is that it has the glossy outside cover that usually shows finger prints and smudges and that the 2MP camera on it doesn't have a light (or flash) which means your pictures will not turn out to be the greatest.

But if money wasn't an issue I would say go for the K790. I am currently using a Pearl as my "blackberry" device and as a phone it lacks many features. It is very sleek though. So if you give me more information on what's important to you I could probably help you out a little more.

All in all if you're trying to stick to your budget without upgrading and you care about camera quality and software on the phone I would go:

1. Krzr (based solely on the price)
2. K790
3. Pearl

Let me know if you do plan on considering an upgrade I know some people who work at rogers who might be able to get you a deal.

Hope that helps

Hi! Thanks for the advice. I'm not sure if I want to upgrage, because they're only offering me a good deal if I extend my contract for another 3 years. I don't know if I want to do that yet. I'm also on a corporate plan. I wouldn't mind extending for 1 more year (total 2 years from today), but they won't give me much of a credit. On top of that, I would also have to pay a connection fee (which makes no sense) for $35. It would be nice to get the Sony Ericson, since I've heard great things about it. I wouldn't mind speaking to one of your contacts at rogers....Amber (amberine_sheikh@hotmail.com)

I'm looking to get a new phone and im willing to spend around $200 give or take. Features that are important to me: battery life, txt, camera, personalized mp3 ringtones and i like the smart phone features (gps, messenger, calendar, managing documents, etc but its NOT essential). Im with fido so i would like a gsm unlocked phone. At the moment, im debating between the treo 750, blackberry pearl, and i really like the new sony ericsson s500i slider phone. Do you have any suggestions and know where i can find a good deal on any of these phones?
