August!

Hello Everyone,

The site will be changing the layout soon but until then you can keep posting in the comments section!

Phones that I've had some contact with this month are the Blackberry 8800, Sony Ericsson w810i, Samsung D807, HTC s620, Nokia n70 and the Samsung m620 (CDMA).

Blackberry 8800 is actually a very nice sleek phone, if you like the pearl you'll love the Blackberry 8800. It runs on the same operating system with its main difference being the fact that it has the full QWERTY keyboard. The software runs well with the exception when you overload it with many applications. Like all other Blackberries it takes about 10 minutes to start up. The 8800 does have expandable memory, and the GPS is quite handy. If you drive a lot you could mount it on your dashboard and have it follow the streets you're on. Although this GPS does not "talk" to you, although I think there might be special software to get it to talk to you. All in all for a Blackberry I rate this a 8/10. My problems with the phone is that there is no wi-fi, and no camera.

**** Rogers will be offering the Blackberry 8820 - essentially the same as the 8800 but includes wifi - I would wait until this comes out, there is no official release date but it should be in store around September ****

Sony Ericsson w810i - Alright since I've owned the K790 and the w600i I was a little skeptical in "going down" to the w810i model. Although I really like this phone, its nice and small, the software is by far the best out of any cell phone I've ever used. The 2MP camera is decent but not something you'd take out for a night of pictures! I really have no complaints about this phone, great reception on the rogers network and like all Sony Ericsson cell phones has the neat feature of when you call someone you can know if they are already on the other line or if someone gets a beep you can tell if they actually did or if they're faking it to get out of the conversation (not that, that ever happens to me :) All in all the w810i would be the perfect phone if it had the better camera and a cover for the camera. (I'm not a fan of bare camera's - the lens always gets ruined)
Sony Ericsson 8.5/10

Samsung D807 - Slim, sleek phone. I'll be honest though I do NOT like this phone and I do not recommend it to anyone. I know about 10 people who have owned this phone and the screen has cracked from being in their pocket. It only has a 1.3 MP camera (which is okay when the phone has amazing other features) but this phone does not have any amazing other features. The ear piece is also very low even when the volume is up all the way. So if you dont have the best hearing this may cause a problem. Even if you have good hearing it is still incredibly low. The menu is alright, but there are certain things that are so hidden that most users wouldnt be able to customize the phone the way they like.
Not really much to say about this phone other than if you want a slider, you have excellent hearing and you really take care of your cell phones this phone could be a potential phone for you. ---- 5/10

HTC s620 - very nice phone. This phone has the full QWERTY keyboard but still remains thin and light. It has a really nice feel to it. It does have the 1.3 MP camera which is decent but its still only 1.3 MP. Windows Mobile is great for people who are very familiar with Windows or Windows Mobile because its a very stable and standard platform. It is extremely user friendly. The HTC also has wifi which is great because it does have a nice screen so being able to surf the net for free pretty much anywhere is an added bonus.
For a smart phone 9/10

Nokia n70 - I dont know what it is about this phone but it just didnt do it for me. One of my biggest pet peeves with this phone was the key lock. If you set it up you would have to enter a code every single time you'd want to unlock your keys and the keys would lock automatically every 15 seconds! I would say that the camera on the n70 is better than the one on the Sony Ericsson w810i even though they are both 2 MP. The software can be a little tricky but if you are familiar with the Symbian OS then you should be pretty much good to go. Since the Nokia n70 isnt offered by any provider in Canada I find that the reception on it isn't always the best. All in all though it does have a beautiful screen and the two cameras (one for video conferencing on the front) which is surely to WOW all your friends. Texting on it is kind of annoying especially since I'm used to the Sony Ericsson and Blackberries and the way they have recognition and drop down menu's for similar words whereas in the Nokia you have to actually press the Next and Previous button and go through all of the possible options that the T9 has come up with.
I can tell this phone has great features that some people would really enjoy so I will not write it off just yet. But I would give it a 6.5-7/10.

Samsung m620 CDMA

This is one of the newest bell phones and although I have just started playing with it, it's actually REALLY neat. Samsung has really out done themselves here (this is saying a lot since I havent had the best experience with Samsung phones). But this phone truly is very sleek and thin, you could slip it into your pocket or purse and completely forget its there. It has 2 screens one on each side of the phone. There is a flip button which you press to determine which screen you want to use. It's actually really neat, but I do warn people this phone isn't the easiest one to figure out. You would probably have to spend a day with this phone at least to figure out all the little features and qwirks it has. The camera on it is pretty terrible but if you dont care about the camera it is a very stylish phone that I can see will do very well especially amongst young people.
From my preliminary experience with this phone I would give it an 8/10.

As mentioned earlier I will be changing the format of the site to help you all! So stay tuned for the great changes!!

Love the new format - it is much easier to read.

A couple of comments on your reviews: It is important to note the when we do launch the 8820 here on Rogers, from what I've heard, it will be WiFi instead of, not as well as GPS. According to a Blackberry rep, they can only fit so many radios in the device (GSM, GPRS/EDGE, GPS or WiFi.)
I still prefer WiFi to GPS any day, but just so people know what to expect!

And on the topic of GPS, just to clarify that while the 8800 doesn't offer turn-by-turn voice direction, Rogers offers this service as an Add-On App called TeleNav that costs $10 a month.

Keep up the great work,

Daniel Smith
